CS2 is the quicker DL, and, he's a beginner so no point in getting CS4 when he's only going to be using about 20$ of the programs worth...

Note: I am speaking only in hypotheticals. Of course using torrents is bad

To be honest, the difference in the time to acquire either is not very large at all if you have a decent internet connection and get a good speed.

Since he's a beginner, waiting a bit longer won't matter much either, I highly doubt time is vital.

However, if he gets CS2 then after he downloads and installs it, if he gets good he will eventually want to get CS4. In which case, he'll have to download and install it too, and he'll need to learn the new shit and get used to it.

If he gets CS4 first, he has no need of getting CS2 in any event, and has to go through none of the aforementioned pains as well as never has to wonder what's in the latest version.

Cost is essentially irrelevant other than "waiting time", based off of the method you have suggested for acquiring these programs. That cost essentially does not matter in any meaningful sense, since it is merely time connected to the internet, unless of course there is some time constraint he must obtain the program by, which is so unlikely I have discounted it.

So, the real question is, why would you suggest CS2 in this purely hypothetical scenario?

CS4 Has two noticeable changes between it and CS2.

Media aware scaling, and a different scheme.
CS2 Runs better on non-souped up computers, and it doesnt take up as much memory as CS4.
CS4 is a 4GB DL, while CS2 is 560MB or so..

CS2 is a solid photoshop, with an easy to learn interface. Learn on CS2, get good on CS4.

Luckily I got all photoshops from 6.0 on so I don't need to think bout it any more! And I havn't downloadeda single one!
