ee.exe and ee-aoc.exe stop working unexpectedly

i've followed all directions while installing ee and ee-aoc from the ee-unlimited pack, but now that they are installed they won't start up on my computer.
i'll run the program and the loading screen will pop up
Empire Empire
or
Earth Earth
The art of conquest
expansion
then the program stops unexpectedly. i've uninstalled and then reinstalled and the same thing keeps happening.
any ideas? i believe my operating system is windows 7 32bit
