General Unit Upgrade Guidelines, Middle and Modern

"This is an idea of how to upgrade your units in a game. There are a few exceptions where you may want to violate these suggestions, but it's very rare and as such not really worth considering for this post. If you think you know of an exception, post it!


MIDDLE

Cav arch: 2 attack, 2 range, 1 speed

Swords:
Normal -- 2 hp, 2 attack, 1 speed
Vs. Pure Archers -- 2 hp, 2 arrow, 2 speed
Great raiders -- 2 attack, 2 speed, 1 hp
Vs Arch/Sword in Team Game -- 1 attack, 2 hp, 1 speed, 2 arrow

Persian Cavalry: 2 attack, 2 range, 1 speed

Knights: 2 attack, 2 hp, 1 speed

Ballista:
2 attack 2 range 1 area damage
OR
2 area damage 2 range 1 attack

Trebuchet:
2 attack, 2 range, 1 hp

Crossbow:
2 attack 2 range (1 speed or hp)
2 range, 1 attack, 2 speed

MODERN

F-15
2 attack, 2 hp, 1 speed
or
2 attack, 2 speed, 1 hp
**NEVER UPGRADE RANGE**

F-117
2 attack, 2 hp, 1 speed
or
2 attack, 2 speed, 1 hp
**NEVER UPGRADE RANGE**

AT Planes
Everything but speed. Speed is shit because they don't strafe as long, making it a lot easier to out-micro them and just generally making them do less damage.

B-2 Bombers
2 hp, 2 speed, 1 attack

Marine
2 range, 2 attack, 1 hp

M1 Tank (HE)
2 attack, 2 range, 1 hp
OR
2 attack, 2 hp, 1 speed

Leopard Tank (AP)
2 attack, 2 range, 1 hp

AT Guns
2 attack, 2 range, 1 hp
OR
2 hp, 2 range, 1 attack (upgrade this way only if you're expanding with hospitals and war hero or some form of morale)

AA Guns
2 attack, 2 range, 1 hp

Flak Halftrack
2 attack, 2 range, 1 hp

Snipers
2 range, 2 attack, 1 hp

Artillery
2 attack, 2 range, 1 area damage
OR
2 range 2 area damage 1 attack

Mortars
2 attack 2 range, last upgrade depends on use.
If used for...
Mortar explore//similar: Do speed if a "big" map, hp otherwise
Combat where they're exclusively back line: area damage"

I rather do 2 hp 1spd 1 att 2 arrow. More att > +1 spd.. Maybe this is just my opinion?

I think this is assumed your fighting a 2v2/4v4 where both your enemy wing & pocket are cav, in this case speed might be a better solution since your chasing more cavs than usual.

+ you can raid a enemy base faster, which is more usefull if you're fighting versus cavs (compared to fighting swords).

I only see 2 spd helpfull against dobble swords so U can run away from them + they cant run home without looseing swords. Other than that I feel 2 spd is a waste. If dobble ca vs sword/cav, then they cant hit and run, cuz every time they stop to shoot my swords my ally will hit their cavs with his. For the raiding part I find it better with 1 att 1 spd simply because the 1 att swords will easier kill stuff than the 2spd once. My opinion tho, I wud like to hear others (may change my mind?).

I never upgrade 2 speed, simply because you don't kill an cav player by chasing his army anyway.
Attack is more useful in this situations. Also I wouldn't recommend 2 speed upgrades vs double sword, for the obvious reason, that your swords are weaker.
And as katzer already stated, attack is more usefull for eco killing than speed.

I only gave the idea why it might be usefull to have 2 speed, i personally never use double speed (only on barbarians when i want to plague run.).

My favor upgrades for Swords is :

Attack x 2

Speed x 2

Hp X 1

And if im vs archers simply I use

Attack x 1

Speed x 2

Arrow x 2

And I really like speed on units because its very useful in late games

Hp x 1

yea these upgrades are shit, really. You should better stick to 2xhp, 2xatk, 1xspd or 2xhp, 2xarrow, 1xspd, 1xatk.
And: The point of playing against ca is to keep your swords alive. You best do this with maximum hp upgrades + maximum arrow upgrades. Not with extra attack.

Tbh lately simply won a mid 1v1 sw vs sw , because i had 2xspeed vs his 1xspeed, making him loosing a lot when he tried to eco rape me , and me being able to outmass then. But in general only set where 12+5 is really >12+4 , is p2n 4v4 medit, since you really got long ways to run. Also i never go without at least 1 atk upgrade fast, so you can 2 hit kill cits at start( at least non hp cits)
