microsoft didn't publish an HD version of aoe 2 because they simply were in the mood for it

the lobby of aoe2 has been shutdown some years ago just like ee's lobby. so some people created a lobby too called voobly which has still got a playerbase of 3000 players at peak times.

Multi-Epoch RTS is dead. Especially the Empire Earth series are. Nobody will risk to invest more money into Empire Earth.
Furthermore, I would'nt like it. It would be nicer if Rebellion could move his ass and finally release the source code of EE (like they did before with Alien vs Predator). There is no way that they can earn any money with Empire Earth. And I 100% bet that if they try stuff like EE HD or Empire Earth IV, they will lose millions (like EE3, EE2).

They didn't loose millions because "multi-epoch RTS is dead" but because they made shitty games...
Baiscally any RTS game has different tiers, if those tiers are epochs or just new tech you get in the game it's still tier based.

Making a proper EE2 the way blizzard did with Starcraft (goal: make a game thats actually good/please the fans) would gain money. EE1 was a huge success, but you already saw in EE AOC that they didn't really give a crap about EE anymore and it went downhill from there.

Sierra really knew how to make epic empire builder games. they make all the age of empires 1 and 2 (both rocked) and empire earth (also rocked) then after that adhoc took over the empire earth franchise, and ee2 and ee3 turned to shit since they obviously didn't get what was so great about ee. Also notice aoe3 was shit also, and thus the mighty empire building games saw no worthy sequels ever again.

Yes and no. RTS games were inferior to other game types in many ways. The engines/graphic cards were mostly optimized for FPS games. Stuff like crysis, far cry, GTA appeared. Also, RBS (round based strategy) games like the Total War series were much more popular than RTS these days (and not only because EE X failed). Finally, until today MMORPGs have become REALLY big and gave the term "ESport" a new meaning. Many potential RTS players are saturated now.
RTS games also have to implement a good AI in order to be successful. AIs are fucking hard and take months of difficult and expensive development. However, actually nobody really cares a lot about it, especially when you play online together (which must be provided as well (!)). Game publishers weren't foolish. They knew what would be most successful. And such RTS games were not. That's the reason that no new RTS games appeared. Known RTS games could survive if they did well but others like EE did not and disappeared.
EE1 was a huge success, but you already saw in EE AOC that they didn't really give a crap about EE anymore and it went downhill from there.
I would not judge AOC that hard. It wasn't really much younger than EEC and it really tried to bring some alternation into the monotone civilisation structure. Also it actually brought the lobby concept to EEC later on.
EE2 failed because the creators did not understand that the complexity of EE was created by the superposition of easy concepts and rules (a little like chess), for example the entire micro which just basically consists of moving army. So they created complex mechanics (stupid territory stuff, crown concept (wtf), weird hero concept etc.). At the same time there was no more love into detail. IMO the graphic is even inferior to EE1, fully scrolled out all unit types of infantry look the same. And dust/fog/rain/flashlights are so strong that you actually could not see anything on the map at special times. Battle tactics completely disappeared, they sacrificed the scissor-stone-paper principle etc. pp.

Well, and EE3 with its comic graphics wasn't actually RTS any more. Mad doc was drunken when they made it. And after it was so bad they even removed their EE3 entry from their website.

Sierra was a publisher, they did not produce games. EE and AOE are mostly done by the guys around Rick Goodman in different companies like SSSI, Mad Doc etc.
