i dont "get" poetry

Post by flurbaturb »

So I like to consider myself a man appreciative of the finer things in life. The arts, needless to say, are chief among those things. But one that has seemed to eluded me through out the years, is poetry. Some poems make me think, and some I enjoy, others are boring etc... But still I feel I haven't reached the real meaning. :?

Help me understand.

This is a thread for posting links to your favorite poems, and for group discussion. Feel free to express yourself, there are no rules, but please be respectful.

Original compositions are welcome! :P

Why do have a stalin profil picture ? Stalin been one of the worst people we ever had in the world!

LAMENT

Democracy is the world's aspiration,
the human rights are founded,
though, democrats are in desperation

Alerters of humantiy,
politcs...they call themself,
but ignorance and arrogance are reality!

Increasing living standarts worldwide,
International fight against poverty
end of story : ''your existance has been denied !''

Fight against terrorism in the east,
trying to introduce democracy,
but too many civilians have deceased!

African humans are starving,
diseases killing population,
Instead, financal crises and economy, policans are worrying,

People call it : Crimes without a gun,
by our politicans done,
but we should never forget,
WE ARE ONE !

Just stopping by at the 1 week check point, and first of all just let me say that I extremely pleased to see all the contributions that have been made!

@Peow, what a wonderful short little composition, I really enjoyed it and thank you for sharing. Although I found it most delightful I must address the concern that some readers may have been a little bit offended, but as I like to say when it comes to art, check your prejudice at the door!

@Customm^

Very beautiful, I can't tell if you are posting this poem from some where else if this is an original composition. Either way, I thought it was a great piece and a really biting commentary on our society today. If that was yours: very impressive!

@Carlos,
Speaking of biting social commentary! A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift, a classic piece of satirical literature. I know I originally intended this thread to be about poetry, but I'm happy to post/discuss other literature, especially when its juicy reading like this!

As I've said before, everyone is welcome to stop by and share.
Looking forward to reading your contributions!

P.S.

The reason I have Stalin as m avatar is that I greatly admire him, and I think he embodies the potential and hope of the human spirit.

ITT: Russian creepy pasta.
One night, I was in bed, beating my wife, when phone ring. I beat
phone, then pick it up. I hear voice. Voice says;
"What you do with my daughter?!"
I turn to wife and demand to know why her father interrupt me beating
her. But she say, her father is dead!
Then, KGB break into house and arrest me for illegal possession of phone.
Such is life in Moscow.

Toys are made by loyal factory for amusement of the children of the motherland.
Toys are of baby, and have realistic crying function.
Soon, it becomes difficult to distinguish baby and toy.
Both are burned for warmth.
Such is life in mother Russia

Babysitter home with young boy and young girl. She get call parents, who are working night shift in factory asking if everything is fine. She tells them da, but the large statue of Lenin in daughter's room is unsettling.
Later, she is arrested by KGB for calling great father of motherland "unsettling". She is sent to count trees in Siberia.
Such is life in Moscow.

Cold dreams of death, old dreams of evil
On dark, dim, december night
As heavy have snow comes down
and they are all buried so very deep
Deep underneath this frozen ground

Not a sigh, not one sound to hear
Tons of corpses are decomposing near
all women and children live in constant fear!
They will ALL be slaughtered in a moment here!!
In this heathen burial ground
Hellcommander!!!!

Heretic, whores, and sinners
And all the servants of hell
Let the satanic torment begin...

Grim, Satanic, Knife, Cuts, Flesh!!
Hellcommander!!!!
Blood, Night, Death, RITUAL!!
Grim, Satanic, Knife, Cuts, FLESH!!
Lust... Night!!!

The black totalitarian triumph
and cold winds can't stop him now
He rides of the winds of hellish chaos!!!
Born of fire from Satans flame

And so on this warrior went
Killing with a godless intent
All the demons lived within - him!
All hail the the Hellcommander of sin
Hellcommander!!!!!!!!

The Sun is Life take hold and fly.
How can anyone try to deny ?
Reach with you're mind up to the sky.

Open it up wide and drench it with light.
Darkness' day's are done, come Celebrate delight.
Victory has arrived in this long hard fight.

ICARUSFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For other uses, see Icarus (disambiguation).

Landscape with the Fall of Icarus (ca. 1558) by Pieter Bruegel the Elder
In Greek mythology, Icarus (the Latin spelling, conventionally adopted in English; Greek: Ἴκαρος, Íkaros, Etruscan: Vikare[1]) is the son of the master craftsman Daedalus. The main story told about Icarus is his attempt to escape from Crete by means of wings constructed by his father. He ignored instructions not to fly too close to the sun, and fell to his death. The myth shares thematic similarities with that of Phaëton, and is often depicted in art.

[edit]Escape from Crete

The Lament For Icarus by Herbert James Draper

Daedalus and Icarus (ca. 1869) by Frederick, Lord Leighton
Icarus' father, Daedalus, a talented and remarkable Athenian craftsman, attempted to escape from his exile in the palace of Crete, where he and his son were imprisoned at the hands of King Minos, the king for whom he had built the Labyrinth to imprison the Minotaur (half man, half bull). Daedalus, the superior craftsman, was exiled because he gave Minos' daughter, Ariadne, a clew[2] in order to help Theseus, the enemy of Minos, survive the Labyrinth and defeat the Minotaur.
Daedalus fashioned two pairs of wings out of wax and feathers for himself and his son. Before they took off from the island, Daedalus warned his son not to fly too close to the sun, nor too close to the sea. Overcome by the giddiness that flying lent him, Icarus soared through the sky curiously, but in the process he came too close to the sun, which melted the wax. Icarus kept flapping his wings but soon realized that he had no feathers left and that he was only flapping his bare arms. And so, Icarus fell into the sea in the area which bears his name, the Icarian Sea near Icaria, an island southwest of Samos.[3]
Hellenistic writers give euhemerising variants in which the escape from Crete was actually by boat, provided by Pasiphaë, for which Daedalus invented the first sails, to outstrip Minos' pursuing galleys, and that Icarus fell overboard en route to Sicily and drowned. Heracles erected a tomb for him.[4][5]
