How The Tournament Works

Post by Omega »

Tournament style: Swiss (if you don't know what this is, ignore it because it doesn't matter, if you do, you can probably stop reading now)
Number of rounds: Determined based upon how many players enter the tournament using a mathematical formula. (2 rounds for 4-5 players; 3 rounds for 6-11 players; 4 rounds for 12-22 players; 5 rounds for 23-45 players, etc.)
Matches per round: 1 (no elimination)

Here's how it works: you sign up, then before the tournament starts look to see who you are playing in the first round. Play that match, and report it. Shortly, round two matchups will be available. Play those and report the results. Continue playing and reporting matches when done until you've played all of your matches.

Matchups in round 1 are completely random. Matchups in rounds after this are still random, but you will face opponents who have the same amount of success that you have had. For round two, the people with 1 loss will play only people with 1 loss, and the people with 1 win will play only people with 1 win (matches are still generated randomly, of course, just random for each subgroup you could say). For round three those with a 0-2 record play people with a 0-2 record, those with a 1-1 record play those with a 1-1 record, etc.

Matches are done this way so that hopefully, everyone will get a few good games throughout the tournament, since you are constantly playing opponents who have done just as well as you have. This is one of the strengths of this type of tournament, the other strength being that it takes significantly less time to complete, meaning more playing, and since there's no elimination, everyone gets to play until the end. The last strength is of course that you get to face a variety of opposition, which tests your skills against a variety of opponents more than a traditional tournament bracket does.

If you're wondering how rankings are calculated, it's simple: players are ranked according to their records. The player with the best record is ranked #1, and the player with the second best record is ranked #2, etc. In the case of a tie in records, we use opponent match win percentage as a tiebreaker. That's just a fancy way of saying we use math to determine who faced the better opponents, and whoever faced the hardest opponents is ranked higher in this case.

Our goal is to run two of these tournaments per day, one during European peak hours and one during American peak hours. Tournaments for each day will be announced about a week in advance, and sign ups will begin 48 hours before each tournament is scheduled to start.
