As candidate for moderator of this fine establishment, I sincerely approve of these efforts to continue the development of this wonderful game to make it both more enjoyable and more user-friendly. I particularly approve the reduction of the wastefully abhorrent 65 second countdown to 20 seconds. 20 is such a perfect number for this purpose; it is neither too long nor short and serves as a perfect symbol of the EE community's love for moderation. And speaking of moderation, vote P-51 for EE moderator!

The Windows 8 compatibility improvements will prove to be a great help in extending the game's life. Any technical details on what was modified to overcome the previous difficulties?

It is simpler than you might think. Empire Earth has been compiled in 2001 while Gold got compiled in 2003 (most likely not using Visual Studio 6 anymore but Visual C++ .NET 2002). This surprisingly works better for many Window 8 users.
